INDIA CELEBRATES KASAB'S EXECUTION
The execution of Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the
lone surviving gunman from 2008 Mumbai attacks, triggered celebrations across
India, with people distributing sweets and bursting crackers.
Kasab was hanged at the Yerawada
Prison in Pune early on Wednesday morning.In Agra, there were impromptu
street-side celebrations after news of Kasab's execution spread.Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
leader Vijay Joshi said: "Today, we are really happy. Kasab, who conspired
to break India, has been hanged. The Constitution of India has so much power
that any anti-national or anyone who harms the country is not forgiven. We want
that the way Constitution of India paved the way for the hanging of Kasab, in the
same way Afzal Guru should also be hanged, there should be an end of
anti-nationals."Bhopal erupted in celebrations,
with local leaders expressing their happiness by dancing on the streets and
bursting crackers.Bajrang Dal leader Ramesh said:
"The Bajrang Dal has always demanded hanging of Kasab and Afzal Guru. In
the last four years, in the entire nation, the Bajrang Dal has demanded this
several times. Today, there is an atmosphere of happiness, when Kasab was
finally given the death sentence. We will celebrate by distributing sweets and
bursting crackers across the country."Congress leader Harish Rawat said
in New Delhi: "Kasab's situation had become a little different. Afzal
Guru's case has been going through a process for a long time. But, Kasab's case
was extraordinary and the new President should take decision regarding Guru in
his own way. People should not lose faith; Guru's hanging will be decided
taking into consideration the magnitude of his crime."Kasab was found guilty on more
than 80 charges in May 2010, including murder and waging war on India, and was
sentenced to death by hanging. The Supreme Court upheld the sentence on August
29.It was the first time a capital
sentence had been carried out in India since 2004. Relatives of victims of the 2008 Mumbai attack
victims on Wednesday welcomed the execution of the lone surviving attacker,
Ajmal Kasab, saying justice has been finally delivered.
