READY TO PUNCH
It seems like after Mary Kom's gracious victory in the London Olympics has paved a way for all the aspiring women boxers all over India & North-East to be specific.The 13th Women Boxing Championship is being held from November 25- 29 at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi indoor stadium at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati. Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi inaugrated the championship along with the Sports Minister Ajit Singh, MLA Robin Bordoloi and other top officials of the Indian Boxing Federation.
Its organized by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association ( AABA) under the auspices of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation ( IABF) ,which will witness the cream of country's women boxers battling it out for the top honours.
AABA President Kali Kanta Boro said that around 200 women pugilists are participating. Two rings have been put up and around sixty officials from across the country will oversee the smooth conduct of the championship. This championship is of much significance as it would serve as a selection platform to pick the Indian women's boxing probables for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
London Olympics bronze medalist Mary Kom would not be participating in the championship. However, she has been invited to grace the ceremony. Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender Singh would not be attending the event.
States like Haryana, Punjab, Kerela, Manipur, host Assam and total of 22 states are participating. Haryana's Pinki Jangra (World No. 5 in 45-48 kg), Meena Rani (World No. 8 in 64 kg) amongst others are lending excitement to the ring.
It's for sure that Guwahati is going to witness 5 days of exciting action..... where it's being proved by today's women that "we now don't like to get a punch, rather we'll love to give one".
