Shivratri means 'The Night Of Shiva'. On 10th March it was celebrated by Hindus all over the world.This festival glorifies the Hindu God Shiva, lord of cosmic destruction and dance.Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year on the 13th / 14th day of the Maagha or Phalgune month.
In Guwahati,,the hub of Shivratri celebrations was at the Umananda temple,situated on the peacock island in the middle of Brahamaputra river.Thousands of Shiva devotees from all over the country pay a visit to the temple on the occasion of Shivratri.
The Shiva temples are decorated with ferns and flowers & people waited in long queues waiting for their turn to offer prayers.
Devotees offer milk,flowers,belpatra,honey, ghee, dhatura etc on the Shivlinga & light earthen lamps & incense sticks to seek blessings & please the Lord. Bhang, an intoxicant made from the cannabis plant was consumed by many on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.
In different parts of the city various temples like Sukleswar temple, Umananda, Lankeswar,Kamakhya, & Hanuman temple at Lachit nagar large gathering of people was witnessed.Along with this different religious organizations & institutions organized cultural programmes in the evening to celebrate Mahashivratri
